The AAEP Performance Horse Committee has developed a fillable Pre-Purchase Examination (PPE) template to help veterinarians standardize documentation and streamline communication with clients during pre-purchase evaluations. This template is intended as a flexible resource—practitioners are encouraged to add their own practice logo and information, and adapt it to fit the forms and processes they already rely on.

The resource includes a legal disclaimer, with an additional option copied below for more restrictive language if desired:
This Pre Purchase Examination (“Examination”) is solely for the benefit of the Prospective Purchaser (“Purchaser”) and may not be used by any other person. All findings recorded by the Examiner (“Examiner”) are based on his/her opinion and the information available at the time of the exam. The Examination will provide the Purchaser with a snapshot of the horse’s overall health and condition on the day of the exam. However, many medical or musculoskeletal conditions are difficult to diagnose and may not be apparent during the Examination. The Examination is not intended to be used as a prognosis for future health, soundness or a warranty of any kind, including fitness for a particular purpose. The Purchaser should further be aware that the Examination does not encompass an evaluation of the horse’s temperament, value, or ability/suitability for a particular rider or discipline. The Purchaser should consider obtaining a written warranty from the seller covering such matters. Any decision concerning purchase of the horse is solely the responsibility of the Purchaser.
Purchaser acknowledges that a material condition of Examiner performing the Examination is Purchaser’s agreement that Examiner’s liability for any and all claims related to the Examination shall not exceed the amount of fees paid to Examiner.
