Mentoring a Foreign Veterinary Graduate

U.S. employers can support foreign veterinary graduates in many ways as these professionals pursue their goals of working in the U.S.

  1. Set a realistic timeframe for licensure and testing.
  2. Have an open discussion on finances, costs, and costs responsibilities while working through the licensure process.
  3. Understand the examination process- written and practical portions.
  4. Recognize that a majority of the exam process is small animal information and adds challenges. FVGs will need time to learn, practice, and study SA skills to complete the exam process.
  5. Understand language requirements and challenges.
  6. Consult with your legal team and understand the visa requirements and know the different types of visas.
  7. Structured training programs can facilitate the visa application process.
  8. Advertise that you are accepting FVGs for appropriate positions.
  9. Understand and recognize how a FVG can work legally while completing the ECFVG or PAVE programs.

Scholarship Opportunity for Foreign Veterinary Graduates

The Foundation for the Horse, the AAEP’s charitable arm, is pleased to offer a new scholarship program designed to support the AAEP’s strategic plan, especially in support of foreign veterinary graduates pursuing equine experience in the United States. Foreign Veterinary Graduates face increased costs navigating the visa process and obtaining licensure through the ECFVG or PAVE programs. This scholarship aims to support foreign veterinary graduates and promote equine practice in the United States.

FVG Scholarships will be made available annually to qualified applicants who display a commitment to equine veterinary practice in the United States.
