The responsibilities of the official veterinarian for horse shows and other equestrian events are as follows:
- They shall serve as a professional consultant for show management, stewards, judges and associated personnel pursuant to equine veterinary matters.
- They shall advise the show/event management team, cooperating persons and agencies regarding the health care of the horses present at the event and shall administer and/or facilitate medical care if the need arises.
- They shall do everything within their power and training to facilitate safe and fair competition in accordance with jurisdiction guidelines.
- They shall serve as the medical advocate for the horse, advising on veterinary practices that promote the well-being of the equine athlete, when indicated.
- They shall work closely with show/event management to ensure that a safe and ethical competition environment for the horse is being fostered.
- They shall not assume or be expected to assume the role, responsibilities or privileges of show/event management, judges, stewards or other officials/agencies at the event.
- They shall not assume or be expected to assume duties other than those associated with that of an official veterinarian.
