The AAEP is dedicated to helping you reach your goals in equine veterinary medicine by providing you with clinical and career resources through your school's student chapter.

How Can Joining My Student Chapter Help Me While I'm in School?

Many of the tools you will need to become a successful equine practitioner, researcher or leader in the profession are available through an AAEP student chapter. Student chapters provide a variety of experiences that help future horse doctors learn about current issues in the profession, connect to local practitioners and provide horse owner education for the community. Student chapter involvement also opens the door for students to gain leadership experience, which is particularly appealing to potential employers. Many chapters also host events and labs which allow students to gain additional hands-on experience.

Chapter Membership vs. National Student Membership

While it is not necessary to be a National Student Member to join your school's student chapter, many benefits - such as applying for scholarships through The Foundation for the Horse - are available only to students who are a current National Student Member. Each chapter may have its own local dues, which are in addition to annual dues of $35 for AAEP National Student Membership.

  • National Student Membership allow you to:
  • Locate exciting internship and externship opportunities
  • Expand your clinical skills with hands-on workshops
  • Connect with potential employers through the AAEP Career Center
  • Offset education costs with member-only scholarships
  • Network with students worldwide through online communities
  • Access clinical care resources like the Convention Proceedings

AAEP also maintains a Facebook group for all equine veterinary students, university educators, and organizations that provide equine educational opportunities for students. The goal of the AAEP Student Discussion group is to supplement student membership of the American Association of Equine Practitioners by creating a place to discuss the challenges and opportunities unique to equine veterinary students. Group members will stay up to date on available scholarships for equine students, discover internship/externship opportunities from our Avenues Partners, learn about in-person and virtual activities geared towards equine veterinary students from fellow student chapters, get or give help for research projects from other equine veterinary students, and more.
