The Foundation established the EQUUS Foundation Research Fellow Scholarship in 2011 to emphasize the importance of equine research and to reward researchers for their contributions. The scholarship awards a research fellow to a worthy applicant working on a career in equine research. This fellow will be awarded to an individual AAEP member graduate or resident who is completing their residency or a graduate program while participating in equine research.
The EQUUS Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity established in 2002, the only national animal welfare charity in the United States 100% dedicated to protecting America's horses and strengthening the bond between people and horses.
Award: At minimum of one (1) scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded. In addition, if the recipient attends the awards presentation during the AAEP Annual Convention, they also will receive a $500 travel stipend.
Who is Eligible? (All below are required)
- Must be a DVM or equivalent (e.g. VMD, BVMS, BVSc, MVB, DMV) trainees in a graduate program (masters or doctoral), residency training program, or a research fellowship program;
- Must be an AAEP member with membership paid through June 30, 2022;
- The eligible researcher must be mentored by a veterinary researcher on the faculty at a University or in practice.
- The post-doctoral training program must have a substantial equine research component.

- Preference may be given to those applying from AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges.
- DVM/Ph.D. combined program candidates at AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges also considered.
- The post-doctoral training program must have a substantial equine research component.
- Tenure-track or career-track faculty support is not the goal of this fellow.
