Internship Type
In-Hospital
The Lexington RREH hospital internship is a 53 week in-hospital internship with a primary focus on surgery (upper airway, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, urogenital), lameness, emergency medicine, internal medicine, and anesthesia. Interns rotate evenly between the different services from July through December, then decide amongst themselves which surgery, medicine, and anesthesia services they want to be involved in from January to May. Interns can obtain more experience in specific areas of interest due to a tailored rotation scheduled from January-May.
There are multiple in-house hospital internship positions available for qualified applicants, with the goal of providing a strong foundation for application to a residency program or entering private practice.
Our hospital clinicians share emergency duties. During emergencies, interns assist the responding clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of these cases. This includes hands-on experience with ultrasonography, endoscopy, radiography, and surgery. Interns also provide after-hours anesthesia and technical support for surgical cases.
Our technical staff is responsible for all treatments and daily patient monitoring, including after-hours and on holidays, allowing interns to focus on case management skills. Patients are hospitalized across nine barns (160 stalls), including a colic barn, a neonatal intensive care unit, a high-risk pregnancy barn, and an isolation barn.
More over the practice’s location in central Kentucky fosters a robust caseload and ample exposure to neonatal and juvenile foals, weanlings, yearlings, broodmares, racehorses, and sport and show horses. The high population of horses in this region lends itself to a busy caseload, especially during the spring and early summer.
The internship positions are intended, upon completion, to provide each intern with the foundation they need to confidently enter private practice or to pursue further training in a residency program. Veterinarians who have completed an internship at our practice have gone on to forge successful careers in a wide variety of fields within veterinary medicine.
In addition to a wealth of clinical opportunities at RREH, interns are encouraged to participate in retrospective studies based on the RREH caseload. Many interns have presented the results of these studies at the AAEP, ACVS, ACVIM, and SFT symposiums and at other national meetings.
Those who have completed our internship program are welcomed back to RREH to fulfill parts of their specialty board requirements if needed. In the surgery and diagnostic imaging departments, this is an opportunity only offered to former RREH interns. Additionally, over the past 10 years, our surgery and medicine residency positions have been filled by individuals who have completed our internship program.

Any additional information the practice would like to share on their internship program:
Rood and Riddle has always promoted excellence in equine practice and advancement in the equine profession. We strive to provide the best training experience to our interns and clinicians as a group. We promote research, continuing education, and collaboration with top research facilities across the country. A clinic-owned recipient herd of approximately 300 mares allows for the opportunities to practice veterinary skills and techniques, conduct labs, and be involved in research if interested. Rood and Riddle supports interns in attending local lectures and educational opportunities with numerous outside programs, including The Gluck Research Center, The Kentucky Horse Park, and The Kentucky Farm Manager’s Club.
The practice organizes several wet labs taught by in house clinicians specifically for the incoming interns. These labs typically take place within the first 2 to 5 months of the start of the internship. The Rood and Riddle Reproduction facility owns over 300 recipient mares facilitating wet labs which include abdominal ultrasound, joint injection, radiology, rectal palpation, bandage, and suturing. In addition to providing expenses for attendance at one approved veterinary conference, the practice hosts several regional and local CE events in which the interns are encouraged to also attend.

Seasonality description
The Lexington facility is located in the hub of the horse world. As such, interns are exposed to large commercial equestrian operations involved in training, sales, and reproduction in many different breeds and disciplines. Therefore, the caseload is somewhat seasonal with the busiest time of the year being February to July during breeding and foaling season. During this time of year, the workload is intense but in the other months of the year we experience a much lighter caseload.
