At Paton and Martin Veterinary Services, our interns will have the unique opportunity to learn from and work alongside our board-certified specialists and experienced practitioners. This yearlong rotating internship offers the chance to be part of a longstanding veterinary practice with an exceptional reputation, renowned for advanced diagnostics and a diverse caseload, in the natural wonderland of beautiful British Columbia.
Paton and Martin Veterinary Services offer a yearlong internship to three candidates who are highly interested in pursuing equine veterinary medicine. This rotating internship alternates between ambulatory medicine and surgery/hospitalized cases every three weeks. Our hospital caseload is incredibly diverse, providing you with exposure to a wide range of medical and surgical cases. You will assist in a variety of surgeries and learn to manage more complex cases. This experience will be both exciting and challenging, preparing you for a successful career in equine medicine.
You will be working with our cohesive team of dynamic technicians and experienced client care team. We have a local board-certified internal medicine specialist who comes in regularly for consultation on medical cases. She is a wealth of information, and our interns love working with her. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to admit emergencies when ready while staying in communication with the surgeon (pending having a current valid veterinary license in British Columbia).
During your ambulatory rotation, you will alternate between three experienced veterinarians with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and interests. A majority of our clientele is English sport horses, and the rest is split between recreational riding, western performance, miniatures, donkeys, and geriatric medicine. You will be able to get familiar with all facets of ambulatory medicine, including suturing, joint injections, ultra-sounding, taking radiographs, lameness evaluation and nerve blocking, all aspects of general dentistry and preventive medicine, treating various emergencies such as chokes, colics, fevers, dermatitis, lymphangitis and much more.
The ideal candidates will have the opportunity to do some on-call after-hours emergencies when ready (also pending having a current valid veterinary license in British Columbia). During your ambulatory rotation, you will have your evenings off, one weekend off, and one on-call for emergency anesthesia only.
As the official veterinarians for world-class FEI show jumping events at the nearby Thunderbird Show Park, we offer a unique learning experience. You will get to work with over 2000 horses, gaining a deep understanding of the FEI and national rules and requirements.
As part of our commitment to our interns, we offer a comprehensive package of competitive benefits. This includes on-site accommodation with paid utilities, a competitive salary, a year-end bonus, all licensing fees, liability insurance, $1,500.00 towards CE, a cell phone for personal and work use, attendance at the local equine CE conference, and licensing in BC if the candidate is eligible. We also boast the best weather in Canada, hands down!
