About Bend Equine Medical Center
Bend Equine Medical Center was created to be an institution of excellence dedicated to the horse. We offer an exceptional combination of talented and caring staff, state-of-the-art facilities and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. We are dedicated to providing the highest level of care to our patients. Our veterinarians have pursued extensive advanced training and can offer the most current and effective diagnostics and treatments. BEMC opened in 1998, following a fourteen month construction phase that incorporated design features from veterinary hospitals and universities across the country. Our 7,000 square foot climate-controlled equine hospital contains a large equine treatment area, large hospital ward and intensive care stalls, a spacious surgery suite, heavily padded induction and recovery rooms, a clinical laboratory with hematology machines and a microbiology laboratory, a complete pharmacy and a reproduction laboratory. Our internship offers a wide breadth of experiences, emphasizing hands on experiences, from surgery to sports medicine, to emergency medicine, to theriogenology and neonatology, to acupuncture and chiropractics, and both an ambulatory and in-hospital experience.
We have a very diverse equine population in our area, from Western Performance to Dressage and Hunter/Jumper, to Endurance. Our clientele is generally able to allow us to practice at a very high level of care with appropriate diagnostics and hospitalization when needed, making for a rewarding professional experience. We have a very talented and positive support staff, and our hospital environment encourages frequent case discussions and collaboration, high quality care, and excellent customer service/client relations. Our two interns are able to customize their experiences to a large degree to suit their educational/professional goals, including some small ruminant experience if desired.
Clinicians include ACVS diplomates and ACVIM eligible individuals.
Internship Duties: Interns assist our doctors in examinations, diagnostics and treatments, as well as helping with our emergency services and being responsible for the oversight of our hospitalized cases and maintenance of patient medical records and treatment schedules (in collaboration with senior veterinarians). They are involved in the emergency call rotation and also see appropriate primary care cases during business hours towards the end of their program. They will be allowed to scrub into surgeries, have primary general anesthesia responsibility, perform joint injections, etc. once they demonstrate appropriate knowledge base and aptitude. We provide a high level of mentoring, and yet allow our interns to stretch their wings in a supportive environment. Our interns have gone on to surgery, radiology, and internal medicine residencies as well as into high quality private practice positions; this internship will prepare you for either pathway.
We do have overnight support staff who are primarily responsible for treatment of hospitalized patients, although interns may be asked to assist occasionally.
Our hospital’s mission statement: BEMC is committed to providing exceptional equine health care with unparalleled compassion and superior service. Our doctors and staff are dedicated to fostering an environment of trust, mutual respect, and intellectual enrichment.
Prerequisite Application Process: Prospective interns are strongly encouraged to perform an externship of at least 2 weeks with us to assure a mutually beneficial fit. Please submit a letter of intent, CV, three letters of recommendation, transcripts (veterinary school only), and our online application form: https://bendequine.com/blog/2023/06/09/equine-veterinary-internship-application/.
Additional Information: We offer on-site housing in a nicely maintained home, including utilities, WiFi, etc. The intern is given time off, and all expenses paid to attend a national level continuing education course. Medical insurance and AVMA Liability insurance is provided (not disability).
