New graduates looking to enter general equine practice or pursue specialty training will be well-prepared by the yearlong internship at Tennessee Equine Hospital. The internship provides extensive experience in ambulatory care, sports medicine, emergency care, surgery, intensive care medicine, reproduction, and advanced diagnostic imaging. The interns initially assist on ambulatory and outpatient calls with more independence given dependent on skill and comfort level. They help manage hospitalized surgical and medical cases closely with our specialists. Rotations will also involve reproductive work at our Reproduction Center in the Spring. Interns rotate primary hospital on-call and are incorporated into the ambulatory on call as prepared to do so.
Tennessee Equine Hospital focuses on having a supportive team mentality. Our team consists of six general practice veterinarians, two board-certified surgeons, and a board-certified internist. We have a strong staff that support the hospital and ambulatory services 24/7. We also have three satellite practices that work closely with our main hospital. We have site-wide doctors’ rounds every Monday and in-hospital case rounds daily. We serve a wide range of both English and Western disciplines from the backyard horse to the elite show horse. The Middle Tennessee region is known for its natural beauty as well as access to a wealth of entertainment opportunities.

Service rotation description
Hospital: Divided between surgery and medicine services. Intern will assist with initial assessment of cases and work closely with specialist on management of cases. While on surgical cases, the intern will serve as assistant surgeon. Anesthesia training will be provided and some primary anesthesia case management will be expected based on competence.
Ambulatory: Assist primary doctors on farm calls; assist with outpatient evaluation at hospital. Some primary case management with back up as skill level allows. Assist with management of reproductive cases in Spring.
