Internship Type
Combined
Energy Equine’s unique internship program has been developed to nurture and support equine veterinarians that aim to pursue a long-term career in equine practice. Applications are due by November 15th for the following year with the program starting June-July 15th.
Philosophy
At Energy Equine, our practice features two clinics and a team of 7 veterinarians that are driven by the equine athlete. Our entire team has been carefully selected to provide the perfect balance of experience, knowledge, and passion. We currently select two interns per year to work alongside our entire team in two-week interval rotations. The first two weeks are a sports medicine rotation, where you will spend a majority of your time with practice owner, Dr. Chad Hewlett, one of Canada’s most sought-after sports medicine-focused practitioners. The second two weeks is a surgery rotation, where you will spend a majority of your time with Dr. Jase Skelton, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS (Large Animal), whose surgical services focus on elective procedures to maximize patient outcome and athletic prognosis. Supplemented throughout the rotations, you will be scheduled with another associate veterinarian, to ensure a well-rounded exposure and experience within practice.
We do not see interns as another number, we feel strongly that they enrich our environment, and our goal as an entire team is to nourish, support and provide confidence to their passion and skillset within our practice.
Our internship program has been developed to prepare young veterinarians for general equine practice with a strong focus on locomotion, assessment, pathology, treatment, and rehabilitation. The internship also focuses on interpersonal skills such as team building, internal and external communication and financial responsibility and understanding. The outcome of this program is to produce high-functioning veterinarians that have the clinical proficiency and interpersonal skills to move into practice seamlessly and confidently upon completion.
Intern Prerequisites
• DVM or equivalent
• ABVMA license
• Candidate must have successfully passed NAVLE exam
• Must have a strong equine background and desire to continue as an equine practitioner
Program Information
The program is divided into four quarters, with specific goals and objectives defined at the beginning of the program start. The intern veterinarian will have monthly check-in’s with the lead rotation veterinarians, as well as quarterly performance evaluations.
Schedule
The intern veterinarian works five days a week, predominately alongside Dr. Hewlett and Dr. Skelton, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS (Large Animal). The intern is also expected to be available for certain event coverage throughout the year.
Emergency & On-Call
For the first quarter, the intern performs all on-call emergency alongside an associate veterinarian. After the first quarter, they begin to take on-call emergency themselves. They are also put into the regular weekly on-call rotation that is balanced evenly across all veterinarians. The intern is always assigned a backup associate veterinarian to support them on emergency throughout the year.
The intern will be scheduled a relief day following a primary on-call weekend, and relief days twice per month, generally on the Wednesday’s of their sports medicine rotation. These days can also be banked towards vacation, as approved.

Any additional information the practice would like to share on their internship program:
Energy Equine believes in the value of a team dynamic and educational opportunities. We host bi-weekly all staff and medical meetings to ensure congruency across our team. On a quarterly basis, we host half day quarterly meetings with our entire staff, focusing on different topics and often including some level of CE. Yearly, we meet as a whole team for a day for a yearly planning session. We host 2-4 internal CE events for our veterinary team a year.
Interns are asked to present rounds in the medical meeting every 4 weeks. They are also tasked with presenting a topic of their choosing to our staff team, and then again to our clients at a public seminar.
Throughout the year, and dependent on quarterly goals, allocated time is set aside to teach interns specific skills such as ultrasound, joint injections, gastroscopy, dentistry, castrations, etc. in order to ensure the intern is getting the most out of their internship experience.
