Ocean State Equine is a 6-doctor practice in Rhode Island. We provide all general practice services, have a heavy sports medicine caseload, and offer elective surgery. We are well equipped with several portable DR units, ultrasounds, shockwave units, PRP, IRAP, and Prostride. We also offer endoscopy, and gastroscopy. The practice serves a wide range of patients and clientele; we see everything from beloved backyard companions to elite performance horses. We are predominately ambulatory at this time but aim to grow our surgical caseload in the future. Our facility includes a climate-controlled hospital with two ICU stalls, a 10-stall barn, spacious treatment areas, an indoor arena with a paved jog strip, stocks, and stalls for in-house cases, as well as a surgical suite complete with two induction/recovery stalls. We are fortunate to have a small herd of three teaching mares that are clinic-owned and available for interns to practice routine clinical skills and procedures on.
We have a close-knit, collaborative team invested in the success of our interns. We hold routine wet labs to develop clinical skills, as well as weekly imaging rounds. For the first 3 months of the internship, interns will be accompanied on all calls by a senior associate for hands-on mentorship. For the remainder of the internship, interns are on-call for ambulatory cases 50% of the time and have a back up doctor available to assist them over the phone or in person as needed. During the regularly scheduled day, interns will ride with another doctor at the practice to participate in routine appointments. If assistance is needed, interns may also be asked to assist with daytime emergencies, elective surgeries, and may be assigned routine wellness calls towards the middle of the internship, dependent on the comfort level of the intern doctor. Interns live on-site and are responsible for night check and morning TPRs. After-hours treatments will be performed on a rotating basis.
Interns are provided with a $40,000.00/yr. salary, free housing on-site, 100% of health insurance, compensation for RI/CT/MA veterinary licenses, DEA license, CE stipend and paid time to attend, 6 paid and 6 unpaid days off, AAEP membership dues, long-term disability insurance, and 100% of the emergency fee for after-hours calls seen independently. Intern doctors have two weekends off per month and 1 weekday off following an ambulatory on-call weekend.
Pre-requisites for application: DVM degree or equivalent, resume, letter of intent, veterinary school transcript, completion of National Board licensing by the end of the academic year, 3 letters of recommendation, and eligibility to drive a motor vehicle. An externship is encouraged but not required.

Other details about technician support of intern doctors
Ambulatory technicians are shared and rotate through each associate doctor on a regular basis. Technicians are present at all emergencies and routine calls during the day. Ambulatory technicians are not present at after-hours emergencies. The on-call associate veterinarian is always available for back up, whether in-person or over the phone when the intern doctor is on call. The hospital does not currently have overnight technical staff. We are currently only hospitalizing elective surgical cases to minimize overnight care that is needed for patients.
