Internship from June 2025-May 2026
Massachusetts Equine Clinic is a full-service equine ambulatory clinic with haul-in capacity that caters to all disciplines. We are seeking an intern/new grad with the possibility of an associate position after completion of internship. Your salary is $45,000 plus emergency fees with either full housing or a housing stipend provided, as you wish.
The clinic is located within commuting distance to Boston and Providence. We have a well-established internship program designed to suit the ambitions of our interns. Whether your interests are reproductive, general care or sports medicine we have the caseload that will get you the experience you need. Our goal is to support you while providing the challenges to help you grow as an individual and a veterinarian. With our mentorship, you will have the opportunity to become a well-rounded veterinarian, ready for all aspects of equine care. We have an excellent support staff that will help you navigate through all the routine matters, such as learning the office software, assisting on the road and with in-clinic patients.
You will get a hands-on experience that will include everything a sports medicine focused general practice has to offer, with the opportunity to see a varied clientele. The caseload is approximately 9500 horses per year, including all types of equids from backyard companions including donkeys, to upper-level competition horses.
A typical day will include readying the vehicle for the road, seeing 4-8 appointments ranging from routine care and vaccines, sick appointments and lameness exams. We have all the equipment, such as digital radiography, the latest ultrasounds and gastroscopes. Become familiar with IRAP, Pro-Stride and Alpha 2EQ while learning all the necessary skills to become a well-rounded practitioner, such as power-floating, treating tough medical cases, diagnosing and treating lameness, colic work-ups, and suturing lacerations. Plan to see some reproductive cases in the spring and early summer. We look forward to creating a well-rounded experience for you. We want you to be comfortable and to succeed. You will have access to over sixty years of combined experience ready to mentor you. Be prepared for 40 hour work-weeks, one night of on-call during the week, and two weekends of on-call per month once you’re ready. No Saturday appointments, or weekend treatments, so when you’re off for the weekend, you are off to explore the best New England has to offer.
Upon completion of this internship program, you will be well-prepared to enter either private practice or a residency program. Better yet, you will have seen how to practice sustainably.
If you’re looking for a practice that knows how to balance hard work with family life and out of work ambitions then this is the practice for you.

Yes
Seasonality description
Due to the climate and clients migration to FL for the winter months, the months of December, January and February tend to be quieter months allowing time to review cases, practice procedures on tech-owned horses, and time to regroup on long-term goals.
Spring, specifically, April to June tends to be our busiest season, which then settles into regular season the rest of the year.
Over the course of the year, the intern will see on average 1.2 after hours emergencies/week. There will be a tendency to have more emergencies in the busier times, and fewer in the quieter times i.e. up to 5 over the course of a busy summer weekend, often none over a winter weekend.

Other details about technician support of intern doctors
90% of the time, interns will ride with a clinician. Each clinician has a technician, except some sharing to accommodate vacations. For days when the intern is comfortable seeing a daytime emergency without a clinician present, a technician is provided. Technicians have the option to assist on weekend ambulatory emergencies. Routine appointments are not made on the weekend. If weekend treatment of in-patients is required, the on-call veterinarian and technicians handle these duties. The intern is only responsible for weekend treatment if they are already on-call for the weekend.

Additional information about the internship program
We pride ourselves on gearing the internship to the needs and desires of the intern. We have many years experience mentoring interns and have local resources and referral hospitals where additional skills can be learned along with additional observation. Four prior interns work in the New England area, attesting to the lasting skills, experience, and wisdom they have gained in seeing the sustainable nature of equine practice. We can teach you how to love being an equine vet, more than you already anticipated. New England is a great place to work, raise a family, and engage in many interests outside of work.
