3. Expert Mentorship: Your personalized mentorship experience includes daily stall side rounds, case reviews, and weekly webinars with interns from various practices. You’ll work closely with all our doctors, rotating through two-week blocks to gain a well-rounded skill set. We also collaborate with specialists in Ophthalmology, Rehabilitation, Radiology, Oncology, and Equine Dentistry to broaden our knowledge.
4. Varied Settings: While primarily based in Navasota, you’ll have the opportunity to spend time at our Cypress, Salado or Waco locations, attend horse shows, and work with our ambulatory outpatient lameness service. This diverse exposure ensures you’re prepared for all facets of equine veterinary care.
5. Gradual Independence: Your level of supervision will adapt to your experience, allowing you to grow throughout the year. From in-house appointments to emergency cases, you’ll progressively handle various responsibilities under direct or indirect supervision.
Internship Breakdown:
• Management of inpatients: 30%
• Outpatient examinations: 40%
• Ambulatory calls: 10%

• Night duties: 5% (including intensive care monitoring and emergency assistance)
Manage Cases Overnight: Our interns play a vital role in providing 24/7 care to our equine patients. While licensed technicians handle routine treatments, you’ll be responsible for managing cases during night duties, including intensive care monitoring and assisting with emergencies.

Clinical Experience and Responsibilities

Service rotation description
The interns will rotate between four services in two-week blocks.
1. Surgery – Working directly with DACVS to evaluate orthopedic cases, do outpatient lameness, and scrub into surgery.
2. Medicine – Working directly with DACVIM and DACVECC to evaluate sick horses, ophthalmology cases, oncology cases, non-orthopedic performance problems, and general practice
3. Overnight – Assist with after-hours emergencies. Assist with in-patient evaluations when noted by hospital staff.
4. Optional
A. Reproduction – Working directly with experienced reproductive specialists to monitor mare cycles, inseminate mares, collect stallions, and do general practice
B. Outpatient/Ambulatory Lameness – Working directly with certified farrier/DVM or experienced sports medicine veterinarians treating outpatient lameness and show prep cases.
Additional opportunities will be available to travel to Horse shows and sales.

In addition to extensive and progressive equipment and procedures done, BVEH Navasota also frequently servers as a clinical trial center, hosts an Emergency/Critical Care residency, and serves as a core curriculum training center for multiple veterinary schools. We host twice annual CE meetings and frequently partner with VetPD to host additional topics that interns can participate in.

Hospital technical staff prepare medications, administer meds according to the treatment plan, and monitor patients. One intern rotation is a night rotation to evaluate patients with abnormal parameters and receive emergencies with on call clinician and to assist hospital staff with replacing NG tubes or IV catheters. Solo ambulatory calls are uncommon but always accompanied by a technician.
