INTERN CANDIDATES FOR THE HORSE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
Ocala Equine Hospital is a surgical referral center established to treat elective surgical cases and orthopedic emergencies. We have a full range of advanced surgical and diagnostic equipment enabling us to provide premier services for the region. Our swimming pool recovery system is unique to the region and compliments our expertise in fracture repair. We are on the forefront of diagnostic imaging and have modalities such as positron emission tomography, standing and general anesthesia computed tomography, high-field MRI, and nuclear scintigraphy. The veterinary staff consists of ten ambulatory clinicians, three boarded surgeons, a boarded internist (onsite consultant), and a boarded radiologist (onsite consultant). We currently have four interns that rotate through the hospital and ambulatory service. For the first month of the program, interns undergo training with wet labs and direct mentorship time with ambulatory clinicians and are not responsible for seeing clients or emergencies on their own. On-call is rotated between interns ensuring every other weekend is completely off-call with no work-related responsibilities. Interns are not required to run anesthesia at this practice. The hospital also does not operate on colic’s, admit internal medicine cases, and has a low after-hours emergency caseload. Once comfortable, interns will have appointments and see emergencies as a primary clinician while always having backup. By the end of the internship, interns will have gained proficiency in the skills required to be a well-rounded practitioner. Benefits* include a well-rounded internship with significant time both in the field and hospital, a fun mentoring atmosphere, weekly rounds, and county rounds with other local practices. Additional benefits include housing, medical insurance, AVMA dues, AAEP dues, PLIT insurance, Florida licensure dues, a $2,000.00 stipend towards continuing education, and a week of vacation. Ocala Equine Hospital is looking for individuals with a thirst for knowledge, an excellent work ethic, fantastic communication, and a passion for making equine veterinary medicine a sustainable career! We recommend intern candidates complete a one-to-two-week externship at our practice prior to applying, however, it is not required. For more information contact Dr. Travis Tull, travistull@gmail.com A CV, letter of intent and three professional letters of reference must be submitted. Applications may be emailed (preferred) to: cray@oehvet.com (or) mailed to: Ocala Equine Hospital, Attention: Cyndi Ray, 10855 NW US Hwy 27, Ocala, FL 34482. Service rotation description
Our program consists of four total interns who rotate positions weekly or biweekly.
• Hospital—Prepares surgical patients (physical examination, bloodwork, radiographs, catheter, bandages), scrubs into surgery, helps with in-house lameness examinations, and assists in treating hospitalized patients.
• Hospital floater-helps in the hospital in the mornings, rotate treatments/on a call with the hospital intern, goes out in the field for one-on-one mentorship with ambulatory clinicians when morning work in the hospital is complete.
• Ambulatory- that sees appointments and assists ambulatory clinicians in the field.
• Daytime ambulatory emergency—after the intern and clinicians are comfortable with emergency workup and management (the intern will always have backup), no scheduled appointments are made, and the doctor remains available for emergencies during the day but can coordinate to help ambulatory clinicians with appointments or arrange for one on one mentorship until an emergency occurs.
Interns will not see emergencies or appointments alone until they have had a minimum of four to six weeks of mentorship with clinicians. After that, they will see and manage ambulatory emergencies with primary case responsibility and backup from senior clinicians. Interns will also perform castrations in the field and hospital with and without supervision as the primary surgeon and perform other procedures like laceration repair, joint lavage, regional limb perfusions, both in the hospital and field.
