Clinical Experience and Responsibilities

Service rotation description
Each rotation is two weeks long. Rotations include internal medicine, ambulatory medicine, and surgery. Internal medicine intern will work primarily on internal medicine and emergency medicine cases during the rotation. This rotation will prepare individuals to receive after-hour and daytime emergencies. The internal medicine intern will have some responsibilities overseeing hospitalized medicine cases. Ambulatory medicine rotation will work with ambulatory clinician’s at large farm calls and will allow them to gain exposure to primary medicine/wellness, ambulatory sports medicine, and gain experience with ambulatory emergencies. Surgery intern will work the surgery team to run anesthesia, assist with computed tomography imaging, and perform orthopedic surgeries, soft tissue surgeries, and emergency surgeries. Surgery interns will also be involved in outpatient lameness cases.

1. Interns have the opportunity to help teach a wetlab to veterinary students that is hosted by Brazos Valley Equine Hospital-Salado in the spring each year. Approximately 25-30 students are in attendance.
2. Lone Star Sports Symposium is hosted by Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals annually.
3. Podiatry lecture series (Ignite) is hosted by Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals annually.

24-hour technical support is available 7 days a week at the hospital. Technicians are available for daytime farm calls for interns, but limited availability for technician support for any level of veterinarian is available after-hours during farm calls.

The caseload leans toward lameness and sports medicine covering a wide variety of breeds and disciplines with a predominance of rodeo and English sport horses. The team sees approximately 15,000 horses per year with 60% examined at the hospital. The outpatient caseload varies between 15-40 cases per day, with the average number of in-patients treated daily varies from 5-25 depending on the time of year.
