Position Full Description

If you are looking to develop and commence your career as an Equine Veterinarian then this is an ideal opportunity to start you down that road! Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre (https://www.wevc.co.nz/) is seeking applicants for our Equine Veterinary Internship Program. We have two full time (minimum 40 hours per week) positions available for a fixed term of 12 months starting in August 2025 or January 2026.

The internship position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in a busy equine hospital but to also develop crucial first opinion skills in an ambulatory setting at our Taupo branch practice. At the purpose built hospital located in Cambridge NZ you will rotate through anaesthesia, reproduction, hospital, medicine, lameness and other performance horse work. Caseload is high and varied and includes hospital out-of-hours and weekend duties. You will have the opportunity to work alongside an experienced group of practitioners with a wide range of skills, including two board-certified surgeons. Your responsibilities will include patient care over hospital patients, participating in rounds and treatments and all continuing education activities. In the Taupo clinic you will accompany an experience practitioner on calls as well as taking on increasing numbers of calls and emergencies as the primary veterinarian as your skills and confidence grow. During this period you will receive close guidance and support from your colleagues. You will rotate between the Cambridge hospital and Taupo, with approximately one third of your time based in Taupo.

There is also the opportunity to go global with Altano as we are offering a 1.5 year internship option, starting with a one-year rotation in New Zealand, followed by six months in a counterpart location in North America, focusing on advanced skillset development!!

Applicants can be new or recent veterinary graduates and must be eligible for registration with the New Zealand Veterinary Council. For the global internship graduates must be from an AVMA accredited school with a passing score on the NAVLE and be eligible for veterinary licenses in United States or Canada. Applicants also must qualify for a viable visa in NZ and will need a valid driving license.

This role requires a motivated individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The applicant must have a high attention to detail and be physically fit with good horse handling experience. A strong work ethic, passion for delivering high standards of care for equine patients and a desire to improve your skills and knowledge as an equine practitioner is a prerequisite.

Benefits:
Regular mentor meetings for performance evaluation and feedback
Diverse caseload across all areas of equine general practice
Supervised and supported by specialists and experienced veterinarians
Reimbursement for VISA and associated medical costs
Mobile phone, NZ Veterinary Council registration fees and CPD expenses covered
There will be access to a work vehicle for use when on-call for the practice
Continuing education including internal training sessions
Salary package of $70,000NZD per annum (depending on candidate)

This represents an incredible opportunity to advance your career at a world-class equine hospital and practice as well as travel and explore one of the most beautiful countries in the world!
