One ambulatory clinician sees a few non equine clients (mostly small ruminants). The clinic will see cases as the local clients need, mostly small ruminants, but is a rare occurrence (few times a year).
Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga is located in the lovely and historic Saratoga Springs, New York. Our state-of-the-art practice stands adjacent to the historic Saratoga Race Course – the site of the oldest major thoroughbred horse race in America, The Travers, and is surrounded by numerous thoroughbred breeding farms and sport horse barns. We have served as the official equine hospital for the Vermont Summer Festival, Lake Placid Horse Show, HITS Saugerties Series and many other local events. Established in 2013, Rood & Riddle in Saratoga was Rood & Riddle’s first clinical venture outside of Kentucky. The Saratoga hospital includes two surgical suites, three anesthesia induction and recovery stalls, one standing procedures room, nuclear scintigraphy, computed tomography, fluoroscopy, a radiology suite, PET Scan, isolation ward, laboratory, and an ambulatory garage. Our staff includes two internal medicine specialists, two surgeons, eight ambulatory clinicians, and 25 veterinary technicians. Interns gain valuable experience in both a hospital and ambulatory environment, with a rotation through all services, providing a well rounded experience.
With the large number of breeding farms in the region, spring provides a wealth of experience in neonatal care, foaling and dystocias, and peri-parturient management of conditions like colic, peri-parturient hemorrhage, and placentitis. Summer brings the addition of racehorse work, both Thoroughbred and Standardbred, with lameness evaluations, orthopedic surgery, and pneumonia cases. Year round, non-racehorse cases make up about 50% of the work load with a variety of cases from metabolic and weight loss work ups to imaging and both medical and surgical colics.
Aside from the robust case load, interns also participate in three time weekly barn rounds, weekly journal clubs, and grand rounds, helping to provide a broader learning experience with the caseload of a large private practice but the learning environment of an academic program. Interns have gone on to both general practice and to residencies in medicine, surgery, and anesthesia.

Seasonality description
Seasonality greatly affects both case number and case type. January to June is very busy with foaling season, with the medicine service alone average over 100 foals per spring. There are 1-4 ERs per night during that season, but then track season begins May to October and the caseload becomes more heavily weighted on daytime orthopedic ERs, lameness evaluations, elective surgeries, and less overnight ERs. Throughout the year, average 5-10 ERs per week of ‘non racehorse’ referrals such as colics, lacerations, chokes. These ER number factor in only hospital. Ambulatory averages another 5-10/week in slow season and 20-40 during foaling season, with the practice having about 600 mares foaling per spring with direct clientele.
