Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center is the largest 24-hour equine referral hospital throughout the greater Phoenix and Scottsdale area. We offer specialty services for horses on a routine and emergency basis in internal medicine and surgery. We collaborate with other specialists in cardiology, ophthalmology, and dermatology. The hospital is located in the foothills of Cave Creek and is fully equipped with a cooled 12 stall nursing and intensive care unit, an isolation building, standing MRI, Nuclear Scintigraphy, full-service radiology suite, ultrasound, endoscopy, on-site laboratory, and 2 surgery suites with padded induction and recovery rooms.
Our veterinarian staff includes three board certified equine surgeons, one board certified equine internal medicine specialist, four ambulatory equine veterinarians, and two small animal veterinarians. Veterinarians are supported by over twenty-five team members.
Internship Duties: Duties include workup and management of appointments and emergencies, primary care of hospitalized patients including treatments and writing orders, assisting in surgery, along with night duties for surgical, referred cases and primary emergency call (which is shared among intern-mates). We invite interns to participate in ambulatory calls as time allows and when interesting cases arise. Interns will also be trained in and run after-hours anesthesia as well as daytime anesthesia as time allows. Rotations include surgery, internal medicine, and a night/emergency rotation. Each intern will rotate on all services. The night rotation includes workup of emergencies with the specialist on call and overnight duties with hospitalized patients. Night technician support is also utilized for patient care several nights of the week.

Additional information about the internship program
The goal of our internship is to provide you with quality experience which balances in-hospital, ambulatory and academic veterinary medicine. You will have the experience and knowledge to begin a residency program or a career in private equine ambulatory practice upon successful completion of the program. The internship will provide you with an equivalent of approximately 5 years’ worth of private practice experience. You will acquire knowledge through diligent research on the cases that come through the hospital and out in the field. We will provide you with guidance and active training so you can leave Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center prepared for either a residency or private practice.
