Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic

Internship Type
Combined
The internship at Durango Equine will allow a new graduate the opportunity to experience and develop skills in a wide variety of services while being mentored by multiple, experienced veterinarians. Services include but are not limited to general practice, preventive medicine, dentistry, lameness and sports medicine, minor surgeries, neonatal care, reproductive medicine, and emergency care. The internship will have a reproduction focus in the spring if the candidate desires. The intern will be given as much case responsibility as appropriate and receive ample mentorship. By the end of the internship, they will be comfortable with the wide variety of skills that encompass equine practice. Our goal is that at the end of the internship, the candidate will be fully prepared to have a successful career as a general equine practitioner or continue pursuing a theriogenology residency.
The intern is responsible for the medical care of three resident horses at the clinic including yearly preventive medicine and emergency care when needed. We foal out approximately 5-15 mares per year at the clinic, which the intern will assist the Theriogenologist with, and then manage as they become more familiar and comfortable. During the breeding season the intern will assist the Theriogenologist with after hours breedings and weekend mare checks. Once the intern is comfortable with emergency and general medicine calls, they will be added into the call schedule and serve as the on-call veterinarian no more than 40% of the time (11 out of every 28 days). The first half of the internship is focused on learning and fine-tuning skills, while the second half of the internship allows the intern to have more independent case management. Throughout the internship, senior veterinarians will always be available for consultation and assistance both during business hours and on an emergency basis.

Seasonality description
Durango Equine is located in the heart of the Sonoran desert, making July and August our slowest season. The extreme temperatures cause us to prioritize appointments to the cooler, morning hours. Because of this it provides a great opportunity for teaching and introducing the intern veterinarian to the practice. The fall is typically more heavy on lameness exams as just north of Buckeye is Wickenburg, the roping capital of the world. The spring time is heavily reproductive focused with many new foal exams and treatments in addition to all of the advanced reproductive procedures.
