6 MONTH Private Practice Rotating Internship – Ambulatory and Hospital
South Shore Equine Clinic offers a 6-month internship program to graduates of accredited veterinary schools that are eligible for a Massachusetts state veterinary license. The goal of this internship is to allow the intern to become a qualified ambulatory associate, as well as a qualified diagnostician familiar with all aspects of diagnostics and to become comfortable with treatment options.
• Offered to graduates of accredited veterinary schools that are eligible for a Massachusetts vet license.
• Prerequisite Application Process: Graduate from AVMA accredited school, passed NAVLE, eligible for a Massachusetts veterinary license and a valid driver’s license are all requirements.
• Dates of Internship: February 1st – July 31st
• Case load: Performance horse evaluations – H/J, eventing, and dressage show horse, Standardbred racehorses, western pleasure, emphasis on diagnostics and therapeutic options. Lameness workups, imaging (Dr, Ultrasound, MRI), shockwave, Tenex procedures, PRP, IRAP, Arthramid, and conventional intra-articular care. Internal medicine caseload includes referrals as well as ophthalmic and medical colic cases; preventative care and dentistry; no colic surgery performed. General ambulatory/emergencies seen weekly and as needed.
• Types of cases: 40% performance horse evaluations, 30% Preventative care/internal medicine, 20% general ambulatory, 5-10% reproductive (seasonal), 5% emergency (no colic surgery)
• Estimated breakdown of workload: Ambulatory/hospital/emergency 3-week rotations. Monday, Wednesday & Friday – full days ambulatory, routine preventative care as well as lameness/purchase exams. Tuesday/Thursday (am) – in clinic cases and surgeries; (pm) -ambulatory. Saturday (am) – in clinic caseload and weekend ambulatory treatments.
• Emergency duty requirements: Shared rotation with one or two other interns including nights and weekends (with back-up clinician).
• Amount of supervision: Heavily mentored/supervised initially, leading to independence for emergencies and some days and/or procedures on an individual basis ultimately leading to independent days of scheduled appointments.
• Compensation: 6-Month stipend of $21,250 plus Emergency fees; medical and dental insurance.
• Work towards becoming an ambulatory associate comfortable treating all types of cases:
o Podiatry and laminitis
o Dentistry (Floating and extractions)
o Ophthalmology (ulcers, uveitis, SCC, Subpalpebral lavage systems)
o Cellulitis
o Metabolic and Cushing’s Disease
o Colic (emergency and chronic care)
o Reproduction management (estrus synchronization and artificial insemination)
o Lacerations and Field Surgery (castrations, enucleations, tumor removals)
o Skin disease (Melanoma, SCC, hives, immune mediated)
o Lameness and Sports medicine: Conventional and Regenerative therapies, Rehabilitation programs, Extracorporeal shockwave and Game Ready therapies, Tenex Procedures
o Senior and Geriatric care
o Ultrasonography (limbs, thorax, abdomen, eyes, guided injections)
o Digital Radiographs (limbs, skulls, necks, backs)
o Acupuncture and Chiropractic (VSMT) care
o All aspects of Preventative Care
• Become acquainted with all the local ice cream shopes and production facilities.
• Enjoy the local culture (seasonal festivals, historical traditions, taverns and pubs).
• Enjoy all that Boston and New England have to offer: History, Sports, Beaches and oceans, Walking and Hiking trails, Skiing.
• 3-week rotation between Ambulatory calls and Hospital based
• On call split with other intern (s) and associates; always with a back-up clinician.
• Housing available within 10 minutes of clinic.

Interns are encouraged to take part in a variety of professional experiences beyond daily case work. South Shore Equine Clinic & Diagnostic Center regularly hosts continuing education events for referring veterinarians and local horse owners, where interns can assist with planning and present cases. Interns also participate in community outreach, such as local pony club and 4-H educational sessions, and are invited to join regional CE meetings throughout the year. When scheduling allows, interns may accompany our doctors to nearby farms for herd-health visits and specialized procedures, offering additional exposure to diverse cases and practice styles.

Additional information about the internship program
South Shore Equine Clinic & Diagnostic Center offers both 6-month and 12-month internship programs, providing a well-rounded experience in hospital-based and ambulatory equine practice. Start and end dates are flexible for the right candidate, allowing us to accommodate individual scheduling needs. Interns work closely with our team of experienced clinicians and board-certified specialists in a busy referral and primary care setting. You will gain extensive hands-on experience in internal medicine, sports medicine, advanced diagnostics (including standing MRI), routine and emergency care, and client communication. Our goal is to help each intern develop strong clinical skills, confidence in case management, and a solid foundation for the next step in their veterinary career—whether that’s an associateship or a residency. We value collaboration and mentorship. Interns are encouraged to participate in journal clubs, case discussions, and continuing education opportunities, and will receive structured feedback and guidance throughout the program.
