The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has named Kathleen Anderson, DVM, owner of Equine Veterinary Care PC in Elkton, Md., as its 2014 vice president. Dr. Anderson will be installed during the Dec. 10 President’s Luncheon at the 59th Annual Convention in Nashville, Tenn., and will assume the role of AAEP president in 2016.

A native of British Columbia, Dr. Anderson grew up actively involved with horses as an eventing competitor, international competition groom, barn manager and racetrack exercise rider prior to obtaining her DVM from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (University of Saskatchewan) in 1986.

Following graduation, she entered private practice in South Hamilton, Mass., under United States Equestrian Team veterinarian Dr. A. Martin Simensen. For the past 20 years she has owned Equine Veterinary Care, a racing and performance practice located at the Fair Hill Training Center and offering ambulatory and outpatient services.

Dr. Anderson serves as vice chair of the AAEP’s Racing Committee and as a member of the Leadership Development Committee and Foundation Advisory Council. She has volunteered as an AAEP On Call representative since 1997 and previously served on the board of directors from 2006-2009 and on the Ethics and Membership Development committees.

In addition, she is a member of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation’s Research Advisory Committee and has presented at the AAEP Annual Convention on issues of practice management and care of race and performance horses.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. The AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners through its nearly 10,000 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
