Precision Rehabilitation: Clinical Decision Making, Progressive Loading, and Return to Performance
Modern equine sports rehabilitation demands more than standard protocols—it requires precise clinical decision-making.
Bridge the gap between rehabilitation science and real-world practice at the AAEP’s RehabXP. Through immersive morning lectures and small-group afternoon wet labs, you will master comprehensive rehabilitation planning, minimize reinjury risk, and safely guide your clients’ equine athletes back to peak performance.

Why Choose AAEP RebabXP?
This course is part of the wet labs-focused learning series called AAEP Experiential—or XP. Unlike standard lecture series, the XP format focuses on skill-building and personalized instruction. Because the group is small, our instructors can tailor their teaching to your specific interests and current experience level, ensuring you return to your practice with immediate, actionable skills.
Note: Registration is strictly limited to 20 participants to ensure a small-group environment with personalized guidance from instructors tailored to each attendee’s specific interests and experience level.
Learning Opportunities
Translate current rehabilitation science into practical clinical decision making through interactive lectures, case-based discussions and hands-on wet labs. From Day 1 functional evaluations and individualized protocol development to Day 2 advanced loading strategies to prepare horses for the demands of athletic performance, you’ll acquire actionable takeaways that you can immediately implement in your practice:
- Perform functional rehabilitation assessments to identify movement restrictions, weakness, pain, compensatory patterns and neuromotor deficits while establishing measurable baseline outcomes.
- Build comprehensive, individualized goal-directed rehabilitation programs featuring both DIY home protocols and professional referral pathways.
- Develop targeted exercise programs that integrate therapeutic exercises, core stability, flexibility and proprioceptive training with appropriate exercise dosage and progression criteria.
- Manipulate underwater treadmill water height and belt speed to custom-fit equine biomechanics and postural goals.
- Evaluate advanced interventions like blood flow restriction, whole-body neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and tendon boots for clinical efficacy.
- Execute disciplined return-to-performance assessments to make confident progress, hold or regress decisions.
Lectures and wet labs will be led by a distinguished group of board-certified specialists skilled in the topics and techniques:
Melissa King, DVM, PhD, DACVSMR – Colorado State University
Sherry Johnson, DVM, MS, DACVSMR – Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, Scottsdale, Ariz.
