Service rotation description

Interns rotate weekly as follows: 1) In-House/Primary Intern 2) Out-Patient / Anesthesia Intern 3) Over Night Intern 4) Field Intern

 Primary Intern
• Focus For the Week:
o Assist with in-house emergencies, patient procedures, and out-patient appointments
o Coordinate patient care and keep patient records
o Assist with treatments when needed, if there are enough in house techs 12pm and 4pm treatments will be covered by techs
o Critical cases or heavy case load may require primary Intern to assist with 12pm and 4pm treatments
• Will be “back up” to the overnight intern during the week and on weekends
• Participate in daytime anesthesia to keep skills sharp
• Thursday nights: overnight intern will be off Thursday nights so the Primary intern will be the Intern on call for the hospital. The Out patient/Anesthesia Intern will be back up to the Primary Intern if needed
• When their rotation is finished, the in house intern will transfer cases at 9 AM on Monday to the new in house intern (after hospital rounds) and then start their week as Out Patient/Anesthesia Intern.

 Out Patient/Anesthesia Intern
• Focus For the Week:
o Assist with 7 AM treatments
 If busy may be asked to help with 7 PM treatments
o Assist associate or resident with outpatient appointments or scrub into scheduled surgeries if not performing anesthesia
o Assist with daytime anesthesia Mondays and Wednesdays
o On call for after hours anesthesia
o Thursday night: back up to the primary Intern over night (overnight intern is off on Thursdays)
o On primary call over the weekend with associate: Friday 5 PM to Monday 8 AM (field calls only)
 This will turn into a solo on call position as the year progresses
o “Back up” to primary intern during the weekend days if needed for help with treatments or as an extra set of hands
o Time for academic learning: work on rounds presentation, research upcoming surgeries, research current case topics, etc.

 Overnight Intern
• Focus For the Week:
o Patient care and overnight treatments
o Assist with overnight emergencies that come into the clinic
o Time for academic learning: work on rounds presentation, research upcoming surgeries, research current case topics, etc.
o Scrub into emergency surgery if treatments allow
• Will round with the primary intern and overnight technician at 7 PM each day before starting shift
• Will round with the primary intern, associate/resident, and in house technicians each morning at 8:00am and then has the rest of the day off
o Helps with 8 AM treatments and patient procedures
o We encourage interns to participate in interesting cases and/or procedures during the day time if their evening was not too busy, and they feel rested enough to do so
• After a weekend, the overnight intern will transfer cases to the primary intern, attend the Monday morning meeting, and then will have the rest of the day off (therefore starting their Field Intern position on Tuesday morning)
• Potential to “back up” primary intern on weekends if outpatient intern is in the field
• Thursdays off: after 8am treatments the overnight intern will be off until 7am Friday morning

 Field Intern:
• Focus For The Week:
o Gain experience in field work and field emergencies
o Become competent with appointment flow and equipment use and care
o Practice technical skills, see appointments and emergencies solo when appropriate
• Accompanies associates on field calls during the day
o May go with an associate doctor as an extra set of hands if we are short a technician. This is not to act as a technician, but to work with the associate as part of the team
• Helps with 8 AM treatments and 4 PM treatments (if back from calls)
• No overnight treatments during the week unless case load requires
• Will help the on call resident or associate with after hour emergencies on Tuesday/Wednesday and has an option to do so on the weekends
o This will turn into solo primary on call duties as the year progresses
• Participate in daytime anesthesia to keep skills sharp
