Position Full Description

Internship Philosophy

The internship will advance the training and experience of recently graduated veterinarians and provide the necessary skills to successfully enter high quality equine practice or a residency program.  The internship will provide exposure to routine health care, lameness and sports medicine, referral medical and surgical care, routine and advanced reproduction, anesthesia, and practice management. The intern will develop confidence and communication skills with a range of clients with patients from a variety of disciplines.  We aim to provide a supportive environment that allows the intern to become progressively independent, while maintaining the guidance and mentorship of our team.

Internship Duties

The intern will initially spend their time rotating between staff veterinarians to broaden their experience and allow for exposure to all areas of equine private practice.  The intern will then begin seeing routine calls on their own while continuing to see advanced and specialty appointments with our staff veterinarians.  The intern will spend time performing anesthesia on surgery cases and will assist on emergency and elective surgeries.  Initially, the intern will share case responsibility with a staff veterinarian while their skills and confidence grow.  Eventually, the intern will provide primary emergency services, with a staff veterinarian available for consultation and assistance.  As the intern gains comfort and independence, their responsibilities will increase.
