Ocean State Equine Associates

Ocean State Equine is a 7-doctor practice located in Rhode Island. We provide all general practice services and have a heavy sports medicine and emergency medicine caseload. Our call radius includes Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts, and eastern Connecticut. We are well equipped with several portable DR units, ultrasounds, gastroscopy/endoscopy, shockwave, PRP, IRAP, and Pro-stride. The practice serves a wide range of patients and clientele; we see everything from beloved backyard companions to elite performance horses. Though this is primarily an ambulatory internship, OSEA has a climate-controlled hospital with two ICU stalls, spacious treatment areas, indoor arena with a paved jog strip, stocks, and a 10-stall barn for outpatient cases. We are fortunate to have a small group of teaching mares that are clinic-owned and available for interns to hone their clinical skills on.

We have a close-knit, collaborative team invested in the success of our interns. Wet labs are held routinely to develop clinical skills. Imaging rounds occur weekly to discuss cases amongst colleagues, and journal clubs are held bi-weekly to ensure we stay up to date on the latest research articles. For the first 3 months of the internship, interns will be accompanied on emergency calls by a senior associate. For the remainder of the internship, interns are on-call for ambulatory cases 50% of the time. A senior associate is always available to assist interns over the phone or in person, as needed. During the regularly scheduled day, interns will ride with a senior doctor to participate in routine appointments. Interns may also be asked to assist with daytime emergencies. During the spring busy season, interns are assigned wellness/vaccination appointments to gain experience and confidence taking the lead with routine cases.

Intern housing is provided, though it is possible to live off-site. Interns are responsible for night check when patients are present in the hospital. The compensation package is as follows: $40,000.00/yr. Salary, health insurance, reimbursement for RI/CT/MA and DEA licensure, CE stipend (and paid time to attend), 6 paid and 6 unpaid days off, AAEP membership dues, long-term disability insurance, and 100% of the emergency fee for after-hours calls seen independently. Additional compensation for seeing emergency cases has ranged from $18,500-$21,840 in recent years. Intern doctors have two weekends off per month and 1 weekday off following an ambulatory on-call weekend.

Pre-requisites for application: DVM degree or equivalent, CV, letter of intent, veterinary school transcript, completion of National Board licensing by the end of the academic year, 3 letters of recommendation, and eligibility to drive a motor vehicle. An externship is strongly encouraged but not required.
