Meet Our Instructors
Dr. Emma Adam
Dr. Adam is an associate professor and industry liaison at the University of Kentucky’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center in Lexington, Ky. In this position, she supports the profession and equine industry, conducts equine research, mentors and teaches undergraduate and veterinary students, and assists with the pre-vet program at the university.
After receiving her veterinary degree in 1993 from the Royal Veterinary College in London, Dr. Adam served as assistant trainer for champion racehorse trainer Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket and in other racing- and breeding-related positions around the world. She came to the U.S. in 2000 to further her clinical education. She completed an internship at Colorado State University, an internal medicine residency at Texas A&M University and a surgical residency at New Bolton Center, achieving board certification in both specialties. She then spent several years as a surgeon and internist in private practice in New York and Deauville, France, before completing her PhD in regenerative medicine at the University of Kentucky in 2016.
Dr. Stacey Cordivano
Dr. Cordivano is owner of Clay Creek Equine Veterinary Services, a two-doctor equine ambulatory practice in Chadds Ford, Penn. She established her practice in 2010, and her interests include performance issues in the sport horse, alternative medicine and emergency medicine.
After graduating from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008, Dr. Cordivano completed an internship at B.W. Furlong and Associates in Oldwick, N.J., followed by a stint as an associate in the practice’s Ocala, Fla., division. In 2020, Dr. Cordivano launched The Whole Veterinarian Podcast committed to holistic professional wellbeing. She also supports the professional growth and retention of early career veterinarians as an equine cohort facilitator for MentorVet and of mid-career equine practitioners as co-founder of the Sustainability in Equine Practice Seminar series, which in 2025 merged with Decade One.
Dr. Sherry Johnson
Dr. Johnson is a senior partner at Equine Sports Medicine, LLC in Pilot Point, Texas, where she focuses on orthopedic rehabilitation, performance horse conditioning, and advanced recovery programs designed to help equine athletes safely return to work following injury. She is also an affiliate faculty member for the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University (CSU) and has served as the AQHA’s Official World Show Veterinarian since 2015.
Dr. Johnson earned her veterinary degree from Iowa State University in 2012. Following an internship at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala, she completed a one-year equine diagnostic imaging fellowship at CSU followed by a collaborative equine sports medicine and rehabilitation residency through CSU and Equine Sports Medicine, LLC, becoming board certified in 2019. Dr. Johnson completed a PhD program at CSU focused on rehabilitation modalities related to tendon healing.
Dr. Ernie Martinez
Dr. Martinez is a field care veterinarian at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky., where he focuses on Thoroughbred farm breeding work, mare and foal care, stallions, herd health and dentistry. Dr. Martinez also oversees the practice’s internship and externship programs.
Raised on a large Standardbred breeding farm in New Jersey, Dr. Martinez received his veterinary degree from Oklahoma State University in 2003 and an MBA in corporate innovation and entrepreneurship from Penn State University in 2018. Following veterinary school, Dr. Martinez completed a rotating field internship at Hagyard Equine and remained with the practice.
Dr. Sammy Pittman
Dr. Pittman is a veterinarian and certified farrier who, with his wife, owns Innovative Equine Podiatry and Veterinary Services PLLC in Collinsville, Texas., one of the few podiatry-exclusive equine practices in the U.S. He received induction in 2026 into the International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame for his contributions to the proper hoof care of horses.
Dr. Pittman grew up in a ranching/farming community and had his first experience shoeing horses at the age of 15. Throughout college and veterinary school, he continued to shoe horses and spent summers in the Sierra Mountains of California shoeing pack horses.
After earning his veterinary degree from Oklahoma State University in 2003, Dr. Pittman met his mentor, Dr. Ric Redden of the International Equine Podiatry Center, reigniting his interest in equine hoof pathology. He established his current practice in 2010.
Dr. Katheryn W. Bills
Dr. Bills is an associate professor of clinical large animal diagnostic imaging at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, having joined the faculty in 2016. Her work focuses on the clinical applications of advanced imaging systems, including CT, MRI, and novel standing imaging systems, including PET and a robotics-controlled cone beam CT.
Dr. Bills obtained her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania in 2012 after graduating from Tufts University with a degree in biochemistry. Following a rotating internship in equine medicine, surgery, and critical care at the New Bolton Center, Dr. Bills completed a diagnostic imaging residency at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. She became board-certified in diagnostic imaging by the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 2016 and received additional board certification in equine diagnostic imaging (DACVR-EDI) in 2022.
