Vivian (Bibi) Freer, DVM, solo practitioner and owner of Freer Equine in Tryon, N.C., has joined the board of directors of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP).

Dr. Freer was installed during the Dec. 10 President’s Luncheon at the AAEP’s 60th Annual Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her three-year term will expire in 2017.

A 1988 graduate of North Carolina State University, Dr. Freer completed an internship with Apex Veterinary Hospital near Raleigh, N.C., before starting a solo ambulatory practice in the western portion of the state. The practice eventually grew to nine doctors before she sold out of the practice in 2006 and established Freer Equine.

To promote a healthy veterinarian-farrier relationship, Dr. Freer hosts “Farrier Jam Sessions” where veterinarians and farriers gather to evaluate, radiograph, shoe and discuss two cases per month. Proceeds from the meetings are used to conduct clinics for participants.

An AAEP member since 1989, Dr. Freer serves on the Veterinarian-Farrier Task Force and is a volunteer instructor of Farrier Short Courses at AAEP student chapters across North America. She previously served on the Membership Development Committee and Veterinarian-Farrier Committee.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. Currently, AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners through its over 9,000 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
