Dr. Sherry Johnson Receives AAEP President’s Award

Sherry Johnson, DVM, MS, DACVSMR, received the American Association of Equine Practitioners President’s Award for spearheading AAEP’s first-ever online continuing education event as program chair of the Virtual CE Summer Series.

The President’s Award, selected by the sitting AAEP president, honors an AAEP member(s) who has demonstrated a dedication to the association during the past year by contributing a significant portion of time and expertise to benefit the health and welfare of the horse. Dr. Johnson was recognized Dec. 9 during the AAEP’s 2020 Annual Convention & Trade Show, held virtually.

Dr. Johnson serves on the AAEP’s Educational Programs and Performance Horse committees as well as the Kester News Hour team at the annual convention. She is senior partner of Equine Sports Medicine LLC, a mobile practice focused on competing Western performance horses; and partner and co-founder of Equine CORE, Inc., which offers equine tele-rehabilitation services.

“Dr. Johnson has been a significant contributor to AAEP in multiple areas, but probably  her most Herculean lift occurred this past spring when we realized our face-to-face CE content, for at least the summer and fall, was not going to be possible,” said 2020 AAEP President Dr. David Frisbie. “Dr. Johnson took on the task of organizing, producing and executing a brand-new CE format, with the result being the AAEP’s first-ever Virtual CE Summer Series.”

A 2012 graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Johnson is a Ph.D. candidate at Colorado State University. She received the 2018 American Quarter Horse Foundation Young Investigator Award; 2019 EQUUS Foundation Research Fellow for her research into new approaches to tendon injury rehabilitation in horses; and 2020 Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation Storm Cat Career Development Award for her project, “Validation of Blood Flow Restriction Training in Horses.”
