We feel that an internship should provide a new veterinarian with opportunities to increase their skill level and gain the comfort and knowledge that makes an equine veterinarian or potential veterinary resident successful. We have board-certified veterinary surgeons and internal medicine specialists as well as sports medicine, ambulatory, and reproduction focused veterinarians on staff.

Rotations are 2 weeks. Interns rotate between medicine, surgery/sports medicine, outpatient/radiology/anesthesia, and emergency/night treatments. Reproduction isn't a rotation, but interns are highly encouraged to spend time at the recipient mare center and breeding center when the caseload allows.

We recently hosted a AAEVT regional meeting. We also occasionally get asked to speak at local feed stores or equine events.

To put it simply, we are busy in the slow season and extremely busy in the busy season. It is fairly slow around Christmas and New Years.

One intern completed only 7 months of internship in our 2022-2023 internship year. The individual was put under unfortunate increased distress when internmates were delayed in arriving and another internmate broke a leg. The intern was unable to manage despite increased technical help, assured weekly time off, and new internmates coming for the Spring 2023 season.

Additional information about the internship program

In the past 22 years, 17 interns have applied for residency and 14 have attained residency in their respective fields. Two of the interns that did not get a residency were not fully committed, and the other was not meant to get into a residency.
