One-Year Equine Internship at Thal Equine
The basics
• Term: one-year contract. Start date flexible.
• Schedule: highly seasonal. We work hard April through October — 5–6 days a week. We ease off November through March — about 3 days a week.
• Emergency: roughly two weekends a month on call.
• Compensation: competitive monthly base, plus a percentage of practice production, plus benefits. Tailored to your experience.
What this is
This is an intensive, highly clinical, and balanced education in real equine practice. You’ll get deep into lameness, emergency medicine, managing sick horses in the hospital, anesthesia and imaging, mare reproduction, and dentistry, with significant exposure to surgery. A large part of our caseload is referral, so you’ll communicate with referring vets and admit referred horses. You’ll also learn to handle the everyday conditions of equine practice — the bread and butter — with finesse and confidence.
I like to teach, and I’ve mentored many young veterinarians. You’ll have my personal attention. There’s a strong emphasis here on good horsemanship — quiet, skilled handling makes the work easier, safer, more sustainable, and frankly more fun. You’ll also be mentored in the “art of practice,” and in the clear, concise client communication and excellent client service that are hard to learn anywhere else.
I developed Horse Side Vet Guide — my vision for a better, more enlightened client relationship, and a top-rated equine health app for horse owners and professionals. Read our testimonials and Google reviews, then look at www.thalequine.com.
I’ll expect you to dive in and work hard. But I want you to have a life. When the practice is slow, I’ll actively push you to take time away. If the fit is right, I’m open to a young vet staying on.
The people here
We’re a small, dynamic group, and we like each other. The feel is family — friendly, upbeat, hard-working. A group of us live on site. We put a high value on good communication and on learning. You’ll do both here, every day.
How it works
You’ll be the first line of care for hospital patients under my guidance, delegating to our technical staff. You’ll take emergency calls — in-clinic and ambulatory — early on, with me available in person or by phone. You’ll admit and do the initial assessment on referred colics and other emergencies, and report your findings to me.
For the first eight weeks you’ll work at my side and I’ll teach you everything I can. After that you’ll start seeing your own patients, and you’ll do more and more as you go. Throughout, I’ll personally see to it that you keep developing as a clinician.

Any additional information the practice would like to share on their internship program:
We have a herd of feral horses that we catch and interns castrate these horses.
There's a strong emphasis here on good horsemanship — quiet, skilled handling makes the work easier, safer, more sustainable, and frankly more fun. I have been a horseman all my life, trained horses since childhood and to me, good horsemanship is a big part of being an equine vet. So we constantly teach that.
You'll also be mentored in the “art of practice,” and in the clear, concise client communication and excellent client service that are hard to learn anywhere else.
I developed Horse Side Vet Guide — my vision for a better, more enlightened client relationship. Its been a top-rated equine health app for horse owners and professionals. Now it has a trained AI bot that understands the logic of the original Horse Side Vet Guide. Its like nothing else. www.horsesidevetguide.com
