Amy Grice DVM, MBA, and Stuart Brown, DVM, received the President’s Award during the Nov. 20 President’s Luncheon at the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ 63^rd Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

The President’s Award, selected by the sitting AAEP president, honors an AAEP member(s) who has demonstrated a dedication to the association during the past year by contributing a significant portion of time and expertise to benefit the health and welfare of the horse.

Dr. Grice, who retired in 2015 as managing partner of Rhinebeck Equine in Rhinebeck, N.Y., to open a veterinary consulting practice in Virginia City, Mont., has played a central role in the development of the AAEP-AVMA Economic Survey.

“Amy has been the wheel horse in developing and refining the joint AVMA/AAEP Practice Economic survey,” said 2017 AAEP President Dr. Reynolds Cowles. “Some of those results were presented here but much more is to come. I want to thank Amy for the many hours she has devoted to this project, the results of which will have influence on so much of our practice life going forward.”

Dr. Grice received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990. She established Amy Grice, VMD, MBA, LLC to help veterinarians navigate challenging practice environments to lead more successful and satisfying lives. Dr. Grice is a member of the AAEP board of directors, and previously served on the AAEP Foundation Advisory Council and on the Educational Programs, Leadership Development, Nominating and Owner Education committees.

Dr. Brown, a partner in Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky., was recognized for his service as an AAEP representative to the AVMA House of Delegates and his legislative advocacy for the race horse.

“If there was ever the perfect politically savvy AAEP member, it might be Stuart Brown,” said Dr. Cowles. “Not only is he an active practitioner who has represented us in the halls of the AVMA, he has served on the Kentucky Racing Commission—and most importantly for AAEP—he has been a great liaison with those in Congressman Barr’s office, officials of The Jockey Club and various race tracks, and has been a good facilitator of discussions that serve the horse and our members.”

After receiving his veterinary degree from Tuskegee University in 1991, Dr. Brown joined Hagyard where he specializes in reproduction, public auction sales evaluations and general practice within the Thoroughbred industry. He is a member of the AAEP’s Racing Committee and previously served on the board of directors and Welfare and Public Policy Advisory Council.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. Currently, AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners through its over 9,000 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.
