Internship Type
Combined
Wilhite & Frees Equine Hospital is 100% equine practice. We have a large ambulatory component that serves the greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. With two surgeons and a veterinary chiropractor on staff, as well as a consulting ophthalmologist and dermatologist, we provide referral service to Missouri, Kansas, and portions of the surrounding states. Our clientele consists of English and sport horses, western performance, pleasure, gaited horses, and companion horses.
Our ambulatory service provides general health and wellness care, dentistry, lameness, reproduction, chiropractic and acupuncture. In-house, we offer elective and emergency surgical care (including arthroscopy and laparoscopy), medicine/neurology, advanced reproduction and advanced imaging.
The hospital has a surgery suite, two induction/recovery stalls, a special procedures room, treatment area, pharmacy, laboratory, 8 stalls, a round pen, and lameness pad. The laboratory is equipped with CBC, chemistry, fibrinogen, SAA and lactate. We have computed digital radiography, digital ultrasound, 1-meter and 3-meter video-endoscopes, IRAP, Platelet Rich Plasma, fresh stem cells, Shock Wave therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, Class 4 therapeutic laser, CO2 surgical laser, and electric dental equipment.
During free time, we encourage you to get out and see all that the KC metro has to offer: BBQ, Jazz, craft breweries (Boulevard), the River Market, fantastic museums, and many other attractions. Kansas City is the home of the Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC, KC Current, and The Mavericks.
Internship Philosophy
The Wilhite & Frees Equine Hospital internship will provide exposure to routine health care, lameness, referral medical and surgical care, anesthesia, and components of practice management. This experience will provide the necessary skills to compete for a residency or to successfully enter private equine practice. The first 2-3 months the interns work closely with each of the staff veterinarians to acclimate to our practice philosophy, standards of care, and to be introduced to our clientele. Following this period, the interns will continue to assist in surgery, perform anesthesia, take part in referral cases, but also see primary cases in-house and in the field.
Internship Duties:
The interns are responsible for monitoring and care of all hospitalized patients and are to be present at all in-house emergencies. The interns will either assist in surgery or perform anesthesia and will work with a staff veterinarian on all referral cases. When ready, the interns will provide primary care (lameness, reproduction, general health, dentistry, etc..) under supervision or with back-up as needed. Case discussion/rounds are held every morning.

Service rotation description
There is no set rotating schedule so your internship experience is yours to tailor to your preference- whether it is joining on a case you have never seen or prioritizing cases in your field of interest (i.e. surgery or reproduction). The interns are responsible for monitoring and care of all hospitalized patients and are to be present at all in-house emergencies. The interns will either assist in surgery or perform anesthesia and will work with a staff veterinarian on all referral cases. For the first 3-4 months it is encouraged to attend each emergency until the doctor is ready to take primary call on their own. Once scheduled with their own primary on call night the intern will enter the on call rotation with the other doctors for one primary night per week and one primary weekend per month, with a back up clinician. When ready, the interns will provide primary care (lameness, reproduction, general health, dentistry, etc..) under supervision or with back-up as needed. Case discussion/rounds are held each morning.

Additional information about the internship program
Our hospital is interested in finding the right person to support and enhance our culture. We firmly believe you will learn no matter where you work, but you should work in a place you thrive in. Due to this belief there have been recent years we have had 2 interns, 1 intern, or none. If there were none it was never for lack of applications but simply because it didn't feel like a right fit for the practice.
