Amp up your ability to diagnose and treat ocular diseases and traumas of the eye at the AAEP’s OphthoXP, the first offering in the new wet labs-focused learning series AAEP Experiential—or XP.
The event is limited to only 20 participants and features a participant-to-instructor ratio of just 4:1 to energize learning and ensure plenty of individual engagement with the expert panel of instructors. OphthoXP will be held Feb. 6–8 in San Marcos, Calif., at Lakehouse Resort (morning lectures) and San Dieguito Equine Group (afternoon wet labs).
Wet labs utilizing live animals and cadaver heads will provide hands-on training in the procedures and treatments necessary to address equine ophthalmologic conditions.
Learning Opportunities Will Include:
- Perform a complete ophthalmic examination, including nerve blocks and use of illuminated magnification, slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct/indirect ophthalmoscopy
- Refine diagnostic procedures, including orbital blocks, ophthalmic ultrasound examination and placement of subpalpebral lavage systems
- Perform orbital and eyelid surgeries, including laceration repairs, tarsorrhaphy and enucleations
- Examine and discuss actual equine ophthalmologic cases on live animals
Lectures and wet labs will be led by a who’s who of board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists:
Caryn Plummer, DVM, DACVO – University of Florida (lead instructor)
Dennis Brooks, DVM, PhD, DACVO – Peterson Smith Equine Hospital, University of Florida (Emeritus)
Bianca da Costa Martins, DVM, PhD, DACVO – University of California, Davis
Renata Ramos, DVM, MS, DACVO – Virginia Tech University
Kathryn Wotman, DVM, DACVIM, DACVO – Colorado State University
In addition, attendees can attend the Salsa and Guacamole Showdown social event that will take place on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Lakehouse Resort Garden Court. Teams will compete to create the best salsa and guacamole. They'll be judged on taste, creativity, and presentation. This activity encourages teamwork, creativity, and a bit of friendly competition. Plus, everyone gets to enjoy the fruits (or should we say veggies?) of their labor at the end!
Following the Showdown, AAEP will host a reception in the Garden Court with an open bar featuring beer and wine and heavy hors d’ oeuvres.
If you’re ready to accelerate your ophthalmic skills and offer a higher level of service to patients and clients, take advantage of this exceptional, small-group learning opportunity!
