Philosophy of Internship
The goal of our internship is to provide you with a quality experience which balances in-hospital, ambulatory and academic veterinary medicine. You will have the experience and knowledge to begin a residency program or a career in private equine ambulatory practice upon successful completion of the program. The internship will provide the you with an equivalent of approximately 5 years worth of private practice experience.

You will acquire knowledge through diligent research on the cases that come through the hospital and out in the field. We will provide you with guidance and active training so you can leave Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center prepared for either a residency or private practice.
Internship Duties
Duties including workup and management of appointments and emergencies, primary care of hospitalized patients including treatments and writing orders, assisting in surgery, ambulatory duties along with night duties for surgical, referred cases and occasionally primary emergency call (which is shared among intern-mates). Interns will also be trained in and will run after-hours anesthesia as well as daytime anesthesia once per week. We have night technicians to help with after-hours treatments on patients.

The primary intern on call with be responsible for intake of any in hospital emergencies and assisting in after-hours surgery as well as primary care of any cases coming in after hours on their shift. The back-up intern will be available to help if the primary intern is in surgery or otherwise occupied and to run anesthesia after hours. The third intern in the rotation will be off, allowing the interns to be primary and back-up on call every third day. Interns rotate weekend call every third weekend being primary or secondary.

Externs will be expected to assist interns with treatments as deemed appropriate on hospitalized patients. The majority of the time will be spent assisting during daytime appointments either in-hospital or on an ambulatory basis.
Goals of the Externship
The goal of our externship is to expose to students to our varied caseload with both an in-hospital, boarded specialist component as well as an ambulatory medicine component. We also have a busy, after-hours emergency caseload that allows for more participation of the extern, especially as we develop more comfort with their knowledge base and skill set.
Application Process
Please send a resume/CV and a letter of intent expressing goals and areas of interest to Dr. Rachel Liepman (drliep@gmail.com) with availability and/or preferred date ranges.
Prerequisites
Must be a veterinary student. Highest priority will be given to third and fourth year veterinary students with an interest in pursuing an equine internship.
Insurance Requirements
AVMA PLIT proof of insurance or comparable insurance required
Living Quarters
an extern room on-site with full bathroom is available to visiting externs. Residence at the clinic during the externship is strongly encouraged to take advantage of after-hours experiences.

Externship Responsibilities
Attend morning rounds, once weekly topic rounds, participate actively in case workup and treatments as well as after hours emergencies.
Other Information
